What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains the changes in the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their surroundings and this can lead to changes in genes, or even entire genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It explains how individuals with traits that are advantageous are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less advantageous traits. This variation in reproduction could eventually lead to the creation and evolution of new species.
The term “evolution” originates from the Latin word meaning unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has a myriad of meanings over the years as it has taken form in the fields of science and other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck’s embryologist disciple who coined the term “transmutation” to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. This shift in gene frequency is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like the increase in muscle mass from diet or exercise can’t be considered to be examples of evolution since they’re not inherited by future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has stood the tests of time and thousands of scientific tests Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their fight to remove evolution from high-school textbooks which includes the removal of any references to the evolutionary origins of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be the ancestral bird’s parent.

Many religious people have discovered a way to reconcile evolution with their beliefs. For instance, some Christians believe that God created the world through evolution and that humans share an ancestral connection with other animals.
It is essential that scientists and educators speak out for teaching evolution. Unfortunately, in a few nations around the world, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made some headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbooks to include content on the evolution of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
While these are troubling changes, it’s important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics, and even the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reason for this is a variety of reasons. Scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions such as the development of new medicines or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve the quality of animal and plant species, typically to benefit of humans. Some scientists are just curious, while others hold a an intense faith in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe the Bible is God’s word and should be taken literally. While not all creationists are Christian but they are a majority. Creationists are usually divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist, and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the six days of creation was true and that the universe and life on Earth were only created recently.
OECs are less well known however they are just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and believe that evolution is a lie.
Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution isn’t possible because it requires an extraordinary event, and that the pioneers of modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.
Some creationists are able to accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their position “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes also referred to as “continuous creationism” or “evolution from the original species.” In this belief system, God creates the original species, and then allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species that are similar to the original.
Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, known as the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all species were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating living cannot come from non-living matter.
In general, creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists, however, are more flexible and allow both evolution and creationism to be incorporated into their curricula.
What is Creationism?
When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this campaign. STR has achieved its first victory by taking away instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. Its sights are now set on removing snippets of Darwin’s notorious finch research as well as on human evolution as well.
STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission is to cut out what it sees as the “atheist materialism” that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe in evolution. The causes aren’t clear but could be due to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the country.
The KACR has achieved many things through its lectures and seminar events. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. One of these was a textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. This led to an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers, including ICR’s John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to thousands of people. KACR and its members have been giving lectures on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
